Ice Skating Turns: Forward Three Turns (Joan Orvis)

Joan Orvis explains forward outside and inside 3-turns. She starts with the left forward outside 3-turn because many skaters use it for flip and salchow.

Thanks so much for some great reminders! Joan, I really appreciate you taking your time to help us be better coaches!

Great info. Yes, we do have little ones that love to swing. this is a simple and concise reminder of how to make the most out of the basic turns, which then makes our jumps possible sooner.

I love how you explained the hip positions in both 3 turns. When I do 3-turns, I just do what comes naturally and wasn’t mentioning hip position to my skaters. It’s the little “basics” that entry level coaches need help with, because we take so much of it for granted. Thank you so much for making that a part of how you teach the 3-turn. I gain more confidence with every one of these basic level videos. Thanks again.

Good reminder about keeping the free hip more forward on the back outside edge going into the double toe. Thanks!

Thank you Joan, this is a very insightful video! It’s nice how you also related this to your backward edges video (on the hip position) — makes it easier to remember.
