How To Figure Skate: Learn a Loop Jump (Nick Perna)

Nick Perna shows how he teaches skaters the loop jump. I think you’ll agree that Nick’s method is ingenious and clever.

Wow! I’ll Have to try that! I’m a lefty and I am always nervous when it comes to new jumps. I’m POSITIVE this will help.

  2. Laura

Makes soooo much more sense! I’ve been told over and over to “just jump” from back crossovers!

Everything Nick’s teaches is right on track

thats some great info! BTW, i just learnt my flip jump but i can’t do a loop. i don’t know why. i started with a half flip and practised my flip off the ice for a while until i got it right.

I love every tip you’ve given on these 3 jumps, and have already used them with great success with my girls. Thanks for your time and talent!

My coach also taught me your way, as I have just learnt the loop. I can almost get it easily the first time I learnt it too. 🙂

Outstanding method. Will definitely use this w students!

WOW!…. Nick can I start skating all over again … from scratch? 🙂 Great, clear instructions.

Great! it has a good technique and for skaters it is very simple and i hope they could undertand this important jump!

Thanks Nick…this is exactly how I teach the beginning loop also..but I wonder if you could address the transition from this into the entrance using backward crossovers to the loop? I find that is the most difficult thing for students to get after this. Thankyou!

I have to try this, but as a lefty. (Why isn’t anything ever described for lefties?) I think every method should be tried to find the one that works for you. Now, if I could just master a backspin…l

I have applied this exercise to myself, as I have been having difficulty rolling off my toepicks and landing back on them in the loop. This exercise does help with that and easily.

Thanks for sharing, love the happy fish. One of my goals in every lesson is to get my skater to laugh…

    very helpful…

Excellent demonstration. I work mostly with lower level skaters and always looking for new ways to break the process down into understandable chunks.

I like the fish theme because I use fish alot in teaching basic skills. I learned the 1/2 loop from a pivot into backspin first and then landed the loop other the “other” leg. This way is alot more fun!

This is my best jump because this is exactly how I learned to do it. I am a clockwise jumper, but I learned to do the inside three entry and if there is a jump that is much better than all the others this is it. Thanks for confirming to me that I learned it right…as it never came from a coach of mine but at a seminar in France.

I would really love to see how you communicate elements to Adults…. whether a loop or tackling the axel….. for the first time

  22. Melinda

This is so nice ! I use the same method , but i have them cross the “canal” lol

  23. karolina

I love the concept of the water and the fish! I will use that on my younger skaters! Thank you.

  24. Linda Gould

This is great! I do something very similar at the goalie half circle.

  25. timcoach

I love this, and I’m going to use this with one little skater and one adult next week when I get back on the ice. (This week my voice decided to go on vacation, so it’ll have to wait.) One of the things that I’ve done over the past two years to teach people at all ages single jumps is telling them, “We’re not gonna really jump right now. We’re just gonna do a little hoppy thing that will turn into a jump later. OK?” And then I walk them through the jump with no hop a couple of times. And then I walk them through the jump and have them “hop” where the jump part should be. At that point we don’t worry about whether they are actually getting all the way around, or if the check is bogus or anything else. It’s mostly about gaining a bit of confidence that it’s not really so hard to jump. I also like using story elements to help students get some pieces of technique down. I had one student recently who couldn’t make herself pull her left arm straight toward her chest in the loop, flip, or lutz entrances. She’d always throw that arm behind her as if it was going to give her more rotation that way. It was a really hard habit to break, and even knowing what to do, she rarely got it right. I told her that she we’re in a Romeo and Juliet/West Side Story type story and she has a knife in her left hand. Every time she jumps she should think, “Oh Romeo!” and join him in death. It may sound morbid, but I knew this teenage skater was a fan of that sort of romance in fiction and she got it instantly. 🙂

I’ve seen your drawings…. This is looking really good!!! Nick you are AMAZING with little skaters, and what they need to progess! (Everyone thinks you only work with high level skaters, it’s great to see how much you do with the Grassroots level of skating!) THANKS NICK! Excellent!

  28. Nancy

Thanks Nick! I love your process. I am going to use it this morning! 🙂 I REALLY appreciate you input into this website!! THANK YOU!
