Figure Skating Edge Tips: Mr. Bill Drill (Nick Perna)

Nick Perna continues a series of videos covering drills and exercises he uses to help his skaters develop power, agility, coordination, and edge control and awareness.  In the first three videos in this series, Nick taught the Bread Drill, the Banana Drill, the Inside Crab Walk Drill, the Outside Crab Walk Drill, and the Propeller Drill.  In this video, Nick teaches an exercise he calls the Mr. Bill Drill.

The drill essentially is a series of three turns and changes of edge (three turn, change of edge, three turn, change of edge, repeating).  The difficulty in doing the drill is the challenge of generating power prior to the change of edge and getting proper body positioning for the next three turn.

The drill starts on a forward edge and should be done on both inside and outside edges on both feet.  Nick explains where power is generated throughout the sequence with edge “crunches.”  Nick says, “I’ve got an active edge every time I’m generating power.”

Excellent exercise and indeed challenging!! Was Mr. Bill finally able to do this exercise?

Great exercise! Just a ? on how to get that rip/crunch on this exercise. Is the crunch produced by bending the skating ankle more or by the free leg pulling more away (faster)? from the skating leg?

Just to answer the questions above…Yes, Mr. Bill was finally able to do this drill and it became one of his favorites. He was, however, never really satisfied with the quality of his “crunches” so he pursued perfecting them almost daily. As for how to produce the crunch on this drill…you need to use the pulling action of the free leg AND you must get a good “blurb” before each edge that you want to “cut” (watch my Standstill C-Cuts Video for more information on this).

Love it! Thank you so much! I guess you could also do it on a tight circle like paragraph loops. It would have to be an exercise for the students more advanced in your Mr Bill Drill! This is great!

Amazing drill! I tried it today with my iphone on one hand and listening to the instructions:) I loved it so much that i will make it part of my warm up. I have to say that Nick makes it look so effortless. I have a hold of the right leg but a lot more work is needed on the left. Thanks so much Nick!
