Shoulder Flexibility for Some Catch Foot Spins (Bobbe Shire)

Figure skating spin specialist Bobbe Shire shares some helpful information related to testing for shoulder flexibility for Biellmann spins, haircutters, and donut spins.  It’s a little hard to see in the video what Bobbe is talking about when she says “see if they can pop the elbow through.”  But the idea is simply to catch the foot correctly and then see if the skater can move the elbow forward.  She says, “Try to get your elbow away from your body to pull it through.”

She also talks a little about stretching techniques for Biellmann spins, but primarily in the hips.  She also gives more info to help with the donut spin.  She says, “I would teach camel side first, and then as soon as your fingers get on that blade, go to sleep and lift that arm so your body turns sideways and then your elbow with come through so it doesn’t get stuck on your hip.”
