Trick to Get Backspin Spinning Backward (Bobbe Shire)

, , ,

Figure skating spin specialist Bobbe Shire shares a valuable tip on how to help skaters who are struggling to learn a correct backspin (blade gliding backward in spin). This can be incredibly frustrating for the skater and the coach. Initially Bobbe talks about the entry she uses for the backspin, to build consistency and confidence. Then she describes the trick, and her demonstrator shows us.

Basically, the trick when the skater is skating forward in a backspin is to rock forward toward the toe and force the blade over to the outside edge. But as Bobbe notes, most skaters with this problem will immediately flip back to the forward inside edge, typically well back on the blade. But through sheer repetition and desire, the skater will slowly learn to overcome this problem.

Who/what is George that she keeps talking about?

Anya, Bobbe refers to the inertial forces that every skater feels during a spin as George. She does this to simplify the complicated concepts and definitions of classical physics into something that all skaters can relate to. Please visit Bobbe’s coach page and watch a few of her introductory videos to get a better understanding.
